    Post to Sharepoint custom list

Hi, I'm pretty new to Infopath, but am trying to work with the 2007 version.
We habe a Sharepoint Office Server with Forms Server and a site with a custom list called backlog. This list is used by my team to track open issues with urgency, completeness, etc.
This list has about 10 different fields.
We would like to have an Infopath form that allows an operator to create a listitem in this list, but only fill out about 4 different fields, he shouldn't see the rest 8or care anout them), they would be changed by others afterwards. I figured out how to post do documents libs but couldn't figure out how to populate a custom list. Is this possible?
What would be the easiest/most elegant way to do this? I saw the article ont his site that uses the webservice layer but I'm wondering if there's an easier way with Infopath 07.
Also, I'm not too familiar with the new Sharepoint (only the 2003 version.) Could I somwhow populate a document library with the above mentioned form and then trigger a second Infopath form, populated with the subset of data from this list but with the additional info for the backlog list and use this second form to poulate this custom list with it?
I'm thinking like this: User A fills out form 1 with 4 fields, posts (to doc lib X). User 2 gets a second form with all 10 fields and the stuff from form A filled in. User2 fills out the rest, posts (to custom list Y).
Is this possible or is there a better way?
I'm sorry for this lengthy post, i don't need verbose answers, just pointers in the right direction or an url where I can read about this.

I have tried the approach outlined in the article and it almost works.
The form reports success, but the list does not contain my submited data.
The list GUID seems to be correct because any modification results in a error message.
Any ideas on why no data reaches the list?

When submitting to web services with rules it will often say that the submission was successful even though it wasn't. This is because the only way Rules can determine if the submit was successful is if the transaction completes successfully. However, if an error happens on the web service side the web service will still respond, but it will wrap it's error message up in the response. Rules can't process this, so it doesn't know that there is a problem.

Long story short, is that something's going wrong on the client side (maybe a typo?), but I don't have enough information to debug the situation. Try taking a long at this humongous thread:http://infopathdev.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1757

Thank you for your time and effort, reading the thread messages solved it for me. I was also using the wrong URL to the webservice!
    Works like a charm now!

Re: Post to Sharepoint custom list

I am also very new to infopath (and sharepoint for that matter).  Was following this example without issue until I get to the "add connection to the sharepoint wev service:" section.  I have tried every level of the url, from stopping at the url for our home page, to going all of the way down to the URL for the list that I am trying to update.  I have tried copying the URL just as it was in the turtorial, have tried typing the actual name of the list.  I have tried .asmx extension and aspx extension (as I noticed that this was the extension that I saw on the URL in the sharepoint site)  I just keep getting errors, my favorites are:

"The file is not a valid XML file.
The form contains XML that cannot be parsed:
A string literal was expected, but no opening quote character was found.

    Line 11, Position 16
         <Title ID=onetidTitle>Error</Title>
    ---------------^"

    or

"The file is not a valid XML file.
    The file cannot be accessed."

I obviously don't know what I am doing in this case.  Any guidance?
