hi there,

Just wondering, could we write to an external field from infopath form?

By external field, I mean those fields we add to sharepoint library via:
- clicking Modify settings and columns
- Add a new column

so far, these fields created externally could be read only from infopath form.

If my explanation is unclear or ambigous, do pls let me know as I'm really anxious to know the answer to this.
reason being is that these fields are pretty powerful as they can be modified from the sharepoint itself (without editing from the form).

It'll likely require some code, but its doable. The other issue is that it will require two operations - submit to the library and then post to the additional column using code. You'll have to submit and then query to get ID and use some SharePoint mechanism (WebDav?) to write to column. I haven't done this before, but in theory it's doable. It will, however, require some coding.
