I need to check if a user exist against a SharePoint list to make certain field visible.  So I put something like this in the expression of conditional formatting   ..../@SP_list  != current_user, but somehow the condition is always true, not matter user exists or not, but if put ..../@SP_list  = current_user, then it works. So seems like its working for equal to but not working if the condition is not equal to, but what I need is not equal to.  Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Well, your current user is never going to equal the whole set of repeating data in that column, so you need to change your logic to say "If All Occurrences of @SP_list are not equal to userName(), then hide control"
