Updating Fields in Repeating Section using Rules Button

Good morning all.  I am relatively new to InfoPath and I'm designing an input form for some of my users.  This form allows our trainers to input training courses their students have taken to a backend SQL database.  I have the form working in terms of allowing that input.   However, there are some pieces of info I would like to add to the record in an automated fashion.  For instance, they will select the students name from a drop list in the repeating section as well as the course description and the relevant dates for completion.  I also need to have the student's ID written into the record.  I can pull this information from another database.  I have created a button that fills in the ID based on the selection of the students name.  However, when there are multiple entries, clicking the button places the ID of the first person in the list into all of the entries rather than adding each person's appropriate ID.

Any idea how I can get this to work correctly?  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Instead of a rule to push, set a default to pull.  Set the ID to default to the ID from the database where the user is equal.

Thanks Clayton!  That was an excellent idea.  That approach will be much more user friendly.  I made the change and set that default value to the User ID when the Name selected in the InfoPath repeating section matches the name in my secondary data source.  Here's what is happening.  Say I select the name John as my first entry.  His ID populates correctly.  I then select Susan.  Her ID is populated with John's ID.  However, if I select Bob as my second entry (positioned before John in the drop list), Bob's ID populates correctly.  So if the subsequent entries in the repeating section hold a position in the drop list that is above the first entry, the ID populates correctly.  Otherwise they take the same ID as the first entry.

    Thoughts?

Hmm, I will have to test this out to see what setting is off.

Well - it looks like this is the issue of the week.  I've seen several other posts here on basically the same issue.  Is this possibly a bug in the app?  BTW... I'm using InfoPath 2003 with SP3.

Oh, I only use IP2007, but I don't know if this is different between the two.
