Using InfoPath, a workflow is started. For each step in the workflow, different teams or people have active tasks pending at different times. This all works as desired which means person 1 creates, person 2 validates, person 3 might have to do some testing and then post results, person 2 takes actions based on results, workflow ends. During that time other people or other teams may want to know what all is in progress.
The submit rules contain a process (web service using K2 BlackPearl) that creates a copy of the form for review. So there are two forms librarys (active and backup copy). The trouble is that if a back-up copy is opened in edit mode, the next user with the active copy who does a submit gets an error since the backup copy can not be deleted and re-saved by the process.
It seemed simple to try unique permissions on the form library. Testing that, contributors see the full set of options in the items drop-down list (such as "Edit in...") but the read-only users still see the exact same thing.
Knowing that "form library" is special, the next test was creating a "document library" instead. At first this was encouraging. Contributors still had edit options and read-only users did not see those options. But then when opening the form, instead of read-only, a "not authorized" error is raised.
All the posts and notes I've searched deal with one copy of one form. Anybody deal with keeping two copies like this and having one be read-only?
