I have a 5-row table inside a repeating group control, both inside an optional group control.  I have the same thing with a 10-row table.  When I go to preview the form, the space holding the 10-row part of my form is tucked right under the label like you would like to see it, but the 5-row table seems to be making space for the 5 row table, even though it has not been selected yet.  I have checked all the size parameters for the repeating group control, and the optional group control.  The heights are both set to "auto", and the widths are set to "100%".  I've tried to make sure I've compressed all the table cells.  The cells do hold text control boxes, and I believe their sizes are set as described above.

 What could be causing the section holding the smaller table (5-row) to take up more (blank) space when the user opens it versus the 10-row table that does not take up that space?

Can you try the below steps:

1. Right click on the table and select “Table properties”.
2. Select Row Tab.
3. Select “Automatically set row height” radio button and click on ok.

You can check same as above steps for each row by clicking on "Next Row" button in Table Properties. Verify once if you enter any "Enter" (Line breaks) in your form.
