    Infopath 2003 Encryption

    Good afternoon,

I'm relatively new to Infopath and have a question regarding manifest.xsf and the supplementary XML files stored on a user's machine.

Can these files be encrypted? The supplementary files associated with my Infopath form contain company information (ex: the names that populate a customer drop down list control). If a user's laptop were stolen, this information would be compromised.

Can Infopath natively encrypt data files? Or should I just hope that a laptop doesn't get stolen?

Any thoughts would be most helpful.

    Thanks,

    Jerry

I dont know how you are using your forms, but You could store company information in a database (or keep supporting file on a server, not locally) so that when/if the information is updated it is done globablly, and that you don't have old data out there.  Also making sure that the data is only available to use in the forms while on the intranet.  I am no to sure on the specifics of infopath, but I do not think that those files are encrypted.

Always hope that the laptop is not stolen! It is best to have encryption on the laptop anyways, expecially if the laptops leave the work zone.  Using a 3rd party software to do this would best be suited, as other forms of protection should be taken(something simple as user agreements, and computer log ons).

Welcome, this place has great info.

    Thank you for the reply.

My form is distributed via email as (example) "Form.xml". Once the form is opened, the attributes are read from the template's published location and saved locally (so that the form can be completed by the user in an "offline" mode"). Therein lay my encryption question, as the xml source for my several drop down list boxes are stored locally. It takes some digging to reach, but they're there as you know.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm still trying to get a handle on this application!

    Hi Jerry,

No native support for encryption, but it's easy enough to add some .NET code to do this assuming you have keys installed to encrypt the form (if not we could install those separately). I'm guessing it would take <40 hours to do this work. We can do some consulting for you. Let us know.
