I've been working hard on getting lookups to work, and finally I have done so. I have them working from drop downs and straight text boxes. Our accounts can be full text names like ABRA and they can be 600. My lookups work when I enter the text as in the case of ABRA, but when I try 600, (the rule does not return anything). Can anyone shed some light here. Thanks to Clay for his help in getting me over the hump.

One thing would be to make sure you have all of the related fields as text fields.

Also I would verify there are no hidden spaces or characters you can try using the normalize function too.

Typically you have to keep playing with it.  Try copying the account num value from the table to the field in InfoPath.
