Overcoming the 255 character limit on a plain text field and displaying in SPD email

Hi, I am trying to use this solution which I found on MSDN: Yes. That is unfortunate. Let's try the substring solution, then. In your SPD workflow, you could try to use the "Extract substring of string from Index with length" action. Copy from Current Item:textfield, starting at 0 for 244 characters (Output to Variable: substring1) then same action again where Copy from Current Item:textfield, starting at 245 for 244 characters (Output to Variable: substring2) and so on. You might have to adjust the number index to make sure you are not missing characters. You could then put all the variables into the email instead of the text field. You could see where this solution starts to break down, though. How many substrings do you create? You would have to arbitrarily choose a number and at some point, someone could go over that number with the amount of characters they have entered into the text field. I have the above into a test workflow on a form library with a test form. This test form has one plain text field in which I have entered 260 characters. When I submit the form, the workflow sends me an email, but showing NO text. I have attempted to log the results and the log shows nothing as well. What am I doing wrong? The problem I have is that the form is under heavy use and I can't change the field to Rich Text. I'm sorry if this isn't purely InfoPath. Also, how do I edit these posts so they don't just turn out into one big paragraph?! C

Sorry about the formatting issues - we are using an older version of Community Server and I only have good formatting luck with Internet Explorer. Do you have a link to the post you are trying to follow? Can you attach a screenshot of your workflow under the Options tab? I think you are saying that all the chars are in the promoted field, but that your workflow email isn't including all of them?

Hi Hilary, Here's the forum post: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c8f21f9c-d1b5-481f-a3bc-ffd8d4ac204e/infopath-data-sent-via-email-being-truncated?forum=sharepointcustomizationprevious When I try it in SPD, it produces nothing in the email. I even test it with a log output but nothing. Weird one!? C

So - you are logging the workflow variable you created, and it has no data? I'll give this a try later today & see if get the same results. What version of SharePoint are you using? If > 2010, is this a ShP 2010 workflow or 2013?

Yes - when I put the variable (that was populated by the substring command) in the email, the email is blank. It seems to be that the substring command is just simply not working from the infopath field I created. It's all 2013, SPD and Infopath.
