InfoPath Dev

I have an InfoPath 2010 form posting to a form library.  I have a simple workflow attached to the form library which contains a “Set Field in Current Item” action.  This workflow completes successfully on its first execution, but on subsequent edits to the form the workflow gets stuck with a “The item is currently locked for editing. Waiting for item to be checked in or for the lock to be released” message.  

The form is relatively complex and contains two digital signatures.  I am the only user using this form library.

The workflow is simple, it just updates a choice column in the form library based on the result of a promoted form field.

If Current Item:WFAction contains Approved
        Set Status to Not Started
then Stop the workflow and log Complete

I’ve tried adding “Wait for document to be Unlocked by document editor” without success.  I’ve also tried adding a “Pause 0 days, 0 hours, 1 minutes” (which I understand takes up to 5 minutes).  Versioning, check out and approval are all turned off.

The lock is held for hours.  How can I overcome this locking issue?

Does anyone have any advice regarding this?  Or is there another forum better suited to answer this question?  I am new to InfoPath.  Workflow action “Set Field in Current Item” seems pretty straightforward, unfortunately locking the form library row indefinitely prevents me from using it.  I'd appreciate any leads.

I saw your original post and didn't reply because I've not run into this before. I guess I would maybe try a test form (with just a field or two) in a test library - add a similar workflow and see if you have the same problem?

I did just try creating a test form with two fields.  The fields are promoted and the workflow is doing a “Set Field in Current Item” action.  I discovered that when using a Web Browser Form, the workflow works 100% of the time.  When using an InfoPath Filler Form, after several successful updates the workflow eventually hangs on the error “The item is currently locked for editing. Waiting for item to be checked in or for the lock to be released.”  I believe that I need the InfoPath Filler Form as I need digital signatures.  Again I’ve tried adding a “Pause” or a “Wait for document to be Unlocked by document editor” without success.

What version of SharePoint / InfoPath? 2013? 2010? I may try to reproduce this if I have a chance.

 I read on sharepointdiary.com “When users edit the document in client applications such as Microsoft Office, SharePoint places a lock and renews it for every 10 minutes to prevent other users from modifying it.  This lock is released automatically when the client application is closed, or after 10 minutes.”  

The InfoPath 2010 client is submitting and closing normally.  Could it be that it is not releasing the lock, and the lock is not getting released for at least 10 minutes after the update?

Are you the only form user? I'd be curious to see if the issue persists from a different computer.

I just tried this on a different computer with a different user.  Same issue "The item is currently locked for editing. Waiting for item to be checked in or for the lock to be released".

There are three rows in this form library.  The workflow was able to update one row immediately, another row after it waited for 3 minutes, on the 3rd row the workflow errored after 3 minutes with "Update list column failed to run".
