Multiple Submissions using Secondary XML data connection

    I'm using this solution here  - https://salnikan.wordpress.com/2013/10/16/inserting-multiple-list-items-at-once-into-a-sharepoint-list/

I have it working until I open the form to edit it and all of the data is missing.  I am not sure what I've done wrong.  The data is and always should be held in the XML file, however, when you edit the form.  The fields in the XML fields are blank and no data has populated.

     Any help would be appreciated.

Hmmm- the link seems to be about using a SharePoint List form set to manage multiple items - I'm not sure what you mean by XML file - since a list form submits the data to the list, and doesn't save it as XML. Can you maybe attach your template under the options tab in a reply, or add some screenshots that explain the issue further?

Thank you for answering me Hilary.  Attached is my template.  The XML file I am using to hold the header information so users don't have to input repeat info for multiple submissions.  Everything works for submitting a new order but when you go to approve or edit the form the data is missing.  Attached are some screen shots as well.  Worse comes to worse I may do the multiple submissions on the item instead of by the person. Edit with no data showing

New Order form - the above is when you go to edit.

All righty! I see what is going on. :)

So - the thing is, InfoPath is NOT going to save data to that XML file when you submit the form. Your "Header" XML file is stored in the form template as a resource, and every time that data connection is queried, it will return the values in the XML file. InfoPath is not going to permanently store that info.

You are using defaults in your main data source fields - so when the form re-opens, the XML file query runs, and then these fields are set back to blank....Here is what I would do. Change your main data source fields to NOT have defaults. On the "Submit" button, add rules to set your main data source fields to the values currently stored in the XML files. Your submit button is outside of the repeating group, so rules on it that set your main data source fields will set all instances.

Thank you.  I did that, then deleted the extra fields on the order form and it works perfectly!

I have several tools wanting this capability so you helped me out!

Ok, now that works great but I can't get it past Supervisor Approval Needed.  I redid the buttons, separated the rules, changed the browser setting to always...and it just sits on that status.

    Any ideas?

Did you check your form load rules? One of the conditions looks weird to me, at least in the copy of the form I have.

yes I did.  Should only be a combo of those.  I've uploaded a new version of the form.

So - are you saying the form never gets submitted with the status of "Supervisor Approval Needed", or when an item with that status is opened, it doesn't switch views, or something else?

The intital submit is working and it shows up on the list as Supervisor Approval Needed, email goes out just fine, but when you go in to approve/disapprove, the correct view shows up - but if click on the reject or approve buttons - the status isn't updating.  I do have a rule on the buttons.

Is the status not being set at all? I guess I'd temporarily remove the rules that submit and close & just make sure of that first (temporarily show the status in the form). Any chance the rule on the "Item" field is affecting this?

Thanks so much for you help Hilary - I needed to add another parameter to the workflow and it is now working.  I appreciate it!
