Insert multiple records to Sharepoint list

Hi, new to InfoPath and am being challenged to find a way to allow users to create multiple records from one form submission.  I need them to be able to fill in the basic info, name, department, category, date, etc then have fields such as item #, color, quantity and need date be repeating(?).

If they have 5 item#'s, I want to them to be able to select the "add item"  button and have the basic fields remain completed and another row appears where they can enter the item info. When submitted, there should be 5 complete records in the SharePoint list.

I have tried using the xml method I found here https://salnikan.wordpress.com/2013/10/16/inserting-multiple-list-items-at-once-into-a-sharepoint-list/ but it doesn't allow me to use dropdowns for some reason. I then looked into the CAML approach - is this my only option? It seems very time consuming/complicated but that's not my world so it might be fairly simple for others.

Any ideas on how to go about this would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Toni
