Hi,

Some questions:

1. Is the Infopath 2003 Toolkit for Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005 the same thing?

2. Why have Microsoft released a VSTO 2005 SE (Second Edition) (which is a parallel product to VSTO 2005) and given it a name which confuses the issue when searching for downloads or any information on VSTO 2005?

3.  I have a Universal MSDN Subscription but I cannot find either the Infopath 2003 Toolkit for Visual Studio 2005 or the Visual Studio Tools for Office in my subscription. Where can I download them?

I'll give a couple quick answers and forward this on to people who are more familiar with the intracies. I believe that there is a blog post on this on our Web site so please look there too.

1) no, they are not the same. The IP2003 toolkit consists of a plugin that allows you to edit IP2003 forms in Visual Studio. VSTO 2005 is for office in general.

2) that would be a good question for Microsoft. we don't represent that wonderful company.

3) there should be links in the right hand column of our homepage: http://www.infopathdev.com/

Some further things to add (so you'll know where I'm coming from):

I've upgraded to VS 2005 and I have InfoPath 2003 (SP2) installed.  I have previously created .ipproj in solutions using VS 2003.NET with the InfoPath 2003 Toolkit for VS.NET.  I have about 5 different forms that were working fine with VS.NET and the Infopath Toolkit for VS.NET.  Now (since the upgrade to VS 2005) these projects will not open in VS 2005 and the Infopath Toolkit for VS.NET will not install with SP2 of InfoPath. 

I can only find a link on your homepage to the Infopath 2003 Toolkit for VS.NET not for VS 2005?

There is also only a link to the SE version of VSTO 2005 which is different to the VSTO 2005 (also dfferent to the vstor.exe runtime installation although also confusing the issue here because of similar naming). 

So maybe Microsoft has overlooked something here?  How do I open my .ipproj solutions using VS 2005 when there is no .ipproj template available in VS 2005?

It seems that the VSTO 2005 is just for Add-ins for Office 2003 and Office 2007 - VSTO 2005 does not seem to add the .ipproj template to VS 2005.

Thanks for any help as I am completely stuck on this and cannot find any help directly from Microsoft.

 

I have an impression that your configuration kind of fell through the cracks for the free downloadable toolkits support... here is how I picture it:

1. Visual Studio .NET + InfoPath 2003 - you can download a free development toolkit

2. Visual Studio 2005 + InfoPath 2007 - you can download free VSTO 2005 SE

So the only configuration for which I was not able to find a FREE download is what you have:

3. Visual Studio 2005 + InfoPath 2003

A toolkit does exist but I am afraid it is only available to MSDN subscribers. You should probably contact Microsoft for more info. Here is a InfoPath Team blog post that announces the release of a Beta version of the toolkit (by now it has already released):

And you have led me back to the link where I started this sorry saga.  I upgraded then found my current dilemma 2 weeks ago - when I searched I found the link you gave just now which led me around in circles but couldn't find the VS 2005 + Infopath 2003 Toolkit.

I have an MSDN Universal subscription but I am unable to find any toolkit for VS 2005 + Infopath 2003 I can only find the Infopath 2003 Toolkit for VS.NET.

So I am still stuck.  Thanks for your response though - I think there must be other developers running into this problem besides just little 'ol me.
 

If you have MSDN Universal, try to look for something named en_InfoPath_toolkit_vsto_2005.iso

Thanks davidair.  I've been able to install this, but I'm still not getting the kind of New Project options I was hoping for based on reading about the InfoPath 2003 toolkit for VS.NET.  Specifically, I was hoping to find a new root note project type of 'Microsoft Office InfoPath Projects'.  Has anyone else had similar partial success, or hopefully greater success?

I am having the same problem. did you ever get this fixed?

Sorry to say I didn't. After much prognostication, I ended up shifting to Word integration since I had a little more experience with it. The XML isn't as tidy, but I've got it to work.
